John Shomaker and Associates, Inc., Water-Resource and Environmental Consultants (JSAI) specializes in hydrogeologic investigations, water-supply planning, siting and completing water-supply wells, environmental hydrogeology, and water rights investigations. JSAI has been serving communities in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and Colorado for over 30 years. JSAI offices are located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Production and Monitoring Well Projects, and Large-Capacity Water Supply Wells Most drilling and well-completion problems can be best solved by prevention, which in turn depends on extensive experience and study of past projects, and on careful preparation of draft specifications, intensive observation, and close interaction with drilling crews during drilling, testing, and completion. Much of what appears to be creativity is in fact the recollection of the solution to a similar problem in the past. This approach has led to successful solutions for what had previously been considered difficult problems; some examples are as follows:

  • Ground-water resource evaluation and inventory

  • Four 2,000-ft wells at Los Alamos, each one easily meeting a very exacting standard for plumbness and alignment, more rigorous than the AWWA standard, in an area notorious for deviation problems.

  • Arsenic production within MCL limits, in arsenic-problem areas (the Atrisco Grant in Bernalillo County, and Santa Ana Pueblo), through application of a creative borehole-sampling program.

  • Problem-free logging and casing installation, owing to careful attention to drilling fluid properties.

  • Successful completion of 15 deep nested piezometers (up to 2,000 ft deep). The piezometers were used as a water-level monitoring system required for Intel Corporation's (Rio Rancho, New Mexico) water-rights permit.

  • Sand production less than the specified limits in all the wells we have worked on.

  • Because JSAI is able to provide ample staff attention, and because a large body of experience is available for its field personnel to call upon, regardless of the time of day, problems can be dealt with from the very beginning.

JSAI provides complete project management for large-capacity water-supply wells. Our services include consultation as to well-design, supervision of all field operations, purchasing of third-party supplies and services, well-site geology, specification and interpretation of geophysical logs, specification and analysis of aquifer tests, accounting, and report preparation.

A summary of the depths of various wells and the client category for which the wells were completed is presented in the table below. Production casing for the large-capacity wells has been up to 20 inches in diameter.
