Principal Hydrogeologist John W. Shomaker, Ph.D.has over 40 years
experience in hydrogeology, including 4 years with the U.S.
Geological Survey Water Resources Division, in Albuquerque, 4
years with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources
(part of which was devoted to coal-reserve studies), and over 36 years
as a consultant in hydrogeology. Since formation of JSAI, he has
administered the firms projects. These have included
large-scale drilling projects, such as the Cherokee &
Pittsburg Coal and Mining Co. (Santa Fe Industries) 1975-1980
exploration program in the San Juan Basin, which resulted in
eight test-and-production wells ranging from 2,221 to 5,747 feet
deep. John Shomaker organized and supervised all of the work on
footage-and-daywork contracts, purchased and scheduled all
third-party supplies and services, and provided project
management and accounting. He has also administered all of the
JSAI projects described elsewhere in this summary, including
ground-water modeling studies, water-planning studies, and
well-drilling projects.
His education includes B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology
from University of New Mexico (1963 and 1965), a M.A. degree in the
liberal arts from St. Johns College, Santa Fe (1984), and M.Sc.
and Ph.D. degrees in hydrogeology from University of Birmingham,
England (1985 and 1995). He completed the U.S. Geological Survey
Training Program in Hydrology in 1966. He is a registered
geologist in Arizona (No. 16,481), Arkansas (no. 482), and
Wyoming (PG-182). Geologists are not registered in New Mexico. He
is certified by the American Institute of Professional Geologists
(CPG-2405), the American Institute of Hydrology (CPH No. 315),
and the Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers
(CGWP No. 414), and is a member of many other professional
organizations.
His work has included collection of ground-water related
information since 1965, during employment with the U.S.
Geological Survey. He has prepared and supervised numerous
ground-water modeling studies. He taught
ground-water hydrology for several years as an adjunct faculty
member in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and in
the Master of Water Resources Administration program (MWRA), at
the University of New Mexico, and continues as a member of the
MWRA steering committee and member of several masters
thesis committees. Email John at jshomaker_at_shomaker_dot_com (To reduce unwanted e-mail generated by "spiders," this email address has been modified by replacing the "@" with "_at_" and the "." with "_dot_." To send an email, simply undo these modifications in the address field of the email.)
